 Success Story:
CitySprouts

Working together in a CitySprouts garden.

More than 4,000 elementary and middle school students in Cambridge, Mass. -- half from low-income families -- are connecting with the food cycle, sustainable agriculture, natural environment and everyday academics in school gardens, thanks to a district-wide program called CitySprouts.

Serving 12 city schools, the program integrates science curricula with the outdoor classroom and leads professional development workshops to help educators teach science in the garden.  Last fall, 77% of teachers in CitySprouts schools (106 teachers) used school gardens for teaching at least one time and as many as twenty times for science, math, history and other subjects.

“I have witnessed first hand the tremendous impact that the garden has had on students from preschool through the eighth grade," said Morse School Principal Patricia Beggy. "It is rare to find one program that reaches such a diversity of students across so many grade levels.”

During the summer, the program's Youth Internship gives 50 young teens an intensive month growing and harvesting food in an urban garden, expanding their first-hand experience preparing and eating healthy food and fostering a strong connection to their natural urban environment.

Open Garden drop-ins offer children and families opportunities to learn about the environment and nutrition.  In 2008, more than 2,900 visits were made to CitySprouts gardens after school and over the summer.
