 Success Story: WIC Learning Garden

Harvesting produced at the Lake County Health Department WIC garden in Waukegan, Ill.

Learning where food comes from, how to grow your own, and healthy-eating habits are the goals of a Lake County Health Department garden in Waukegan, Ill.

The Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC), with help from Chicago Botanic Garden’s Green Youth Farm, plant tomatoes, beans, chives, onions, carrots, radishes, hot peppers, bell peppers, yellow squash, spaghetti squash and lettuce each spring in a garden on the health center’s grounds.

Beside growing how-to's, the garden lets children see that food doesn’t have to come pre-packaged from grocery stores.  They also harvest vegetables when they visit WIC for nutrition education.

The Green Youth Farm, a partner of WIC, is a leadership program in which students grow fresh food for area farmers markets. Students contribute to the success of the WIC garden by weeding, pruning and harvesting.
